[수완뉴스=육주현 기자] The musical Chicago will be performed at D Cube Link Arts Center from June 7 to September 29, 2024. In the 24 years since its Korean premiere in 2000, the musical has been performed 1,500 times and attended by more than 1.54 million people, and despite the coronavirus pandemic in 2021, it achieved a 96% occupancy rate, its highest performance ever. Chicago, a musical that creates new meanings and records every season, is proving that ‘classics are forever.
The 2024 Korean production of the musical Chicagowill feature the highest-performing cast in the show’s history, with returning cast members Jungwon Choi, Gongju Yoon, Ivy, Tiffany Young, KyungAh Min, Gunhyung Park, JaeRim Choi, YoungJoo Kim, KyungSun Kim, JungHyun Cha, and S.J. Kim, along with new auditioned ensemble member SunAh Jung (Velma Kelly). Arguably the finest cast in the country, the Chicago team will be joined by the same international and domestic staff who have been with the show since its inaugural season in 2007 – Director Tania Nardini, who re-created the original New York production, Choreographer Gary Chryst, who re-created the original New York production, Music Supervisor Rob Bowman, Director of Domestic Collaborations Taehoon Kim, Choreographer Jihyun Noh, and Music Supervisor Minyoung Oh – to bring audiences the best Chicago has to offer in 2024.
Choi Jung-won, who plays Velma Kelly , has been a part of the history of Korean productions of the musical Chicago since 2000, said, “I’m looking forward to this season. I’ve grown as an actor and as a person since last season, and I believe that growth will have a good impact on the way I present ‘Velma’ in 2024,”she said.
Meanwhile, new musical star Jung Sun-ah, who joined the cast after auditioning, said , “I am honored to be a part of this production now that I have begun the second act of my acting career , ” andadded , “I am also worried because the performance is as important as the singing, and I have heard many stories from my fellow actors that they shed tears during practice, but I will do my best to show my favorite work perfectly, and I am looking forward to my growth and the new look I will show to the audience.”
The 2024 production of Chicago will feature an elite cast of 29 performers, ranging from longtime company members to newcomers, who will bring a mix of classical elegance and energetic heat to the stage.
