4,932 Public Secondary School Teachers to Be Hired for the 2027 School Year… A 31% Decrease from the Previous Year

The number of positions to be filled through the 2027 academic year public secondary school (subject-specific) teacher recruitment exam has been finalized at 4,932. This represents a decrease of 2,215 (31.0%) from the 7,147 positions announced last year. The Ministry of Education compiled and released the recruitment status for the 2027 academic year competitive examinations to select candidates for public secondary, special education (secondary), health, nutrition, librarian, and professional counseling teacher positions, based on announcements published by 17 metropolitan and provincial offices of education on their respective websites on September 30.

The number of positions for secondary subject teachers increased by 545 compared to the previously announced preliminary estimate (4,387). The number of positions announced by academic year was 4,518 for the 2024 academic year, 5,504 for the 2025 academic year, and 7,147 for the 2026 academic year.

By province and city, Gyeonggi had the highest number at 1,523, followed by Seoul with 584, Incheon with 542, South Gyeongsang with 400, South Chungcheong with 342, Busan with 289, and South Jeolla with 275. Gyeonggi Province increased its enrollment by 378 students compared to its preliminary announcement, but this figure is 727 fewer than last year’s total (2,250). Seoul also saw a decrease from 900 last year to 584. In contrast, Daegu increased from 115 last year to 188, and Gangwon Province rose from 145 to 170. Gwangju (18) and Daejeon (27) had the fewest number of selected candidates. Incheon decreased from 581 last year to 542; South Chungcheong Province decreased from 495 to 342; Busan decreased from 525 to 289; and South Gyeongsang Province decreased from 576 to 400. Regions that increased their recruitment numbers beyond the preliminary announcement included Gyeonggi (378), Incheon (42), Seoul (31), South Jeolla (35), and North Jeolla (27), while Busan, South Gyeongsang, and South Chungcheong maintained their previously announced numbers.

A total of 404 special education (secondary) teachers will be recruited. This represents an increase of 101 (33.3%) compared to last year’s 303. The breakdown is as follows: Gyeonggi (76), North Chungcheong and South Chungcheong (41 each), Incheon (38), North Gyeongsang (34), and North Jeolla (32). North Gyeongsang doubled its quota from the previously announced 17 to 34, while North Chungcheong increased its quota from 18 last year to 41. The number of special education teachers to be recruited for kindergartens and elementary schools was announced separately on September 9.

The number of non-academic teachers also increased across the board. The number of health teachers rose to 370, an increase of 36 from last year’s 334, while the number of nutrition teachers rose to 268, an increase of 25 from last year’s 243. The number of school librarians recruited reached 103, double last year’s figure of 52, while the number of professional counselors rose to 324, an increase of 95 (41.5%) from last year’s 229.

Gyeonggi Province also had the largest recruitment scale for non-academic teachers. Gyeonggi will recruit 97 health teachers, 82 nutrition teachers, 16 school librarians, and 68 professional counselors. Gyeonggi increased its recruitment of specialized counseling teachers from the previously announced 53 to 68, followed by South Chungcheong with 32, and North Jeolla and North Gyeongsang with 24 each. Sejong will not be recruiting nutrition teachers.
