[Suwan News = Reporter Kim Dong-ju] To overcome the crisis facing the fishing industry caused by the aging population and population decline in traditional fishing communities, Gangneung City has launched an initiative to bring in new blood. The city plans to implement practical support measures to help young people returning to fishing villages overcome initial financial difficulties and establish a stable foothold.

Goal of Alleviating the Financial Burden During the Early Stages of a Startup

Gangneung City is accepting applications from November 10 through December 1 for the “2026 Settlement Support Program for Young Fishermen.” This program is being implemented to provide settlement grants to young fisheries business owners, whose income is unstable during the early stages of starting their businesses, in order to help stabilize their household finances and, in the long term, revitalize the local fisheries industry.

For applicants under 40 years of age with 3 years or less of work experience

Eligible applicants are young fishermen aged 18 or older but under 40 (born between January 1, 1986, and December 31, 2008) who have three years or less of experience managing a fishing business. A total of nine participants will be selected, and the city plans to choose the final recipients through a review of application materials and interviews.

Differentiated Support Based on Work Experience…Up to 1.1 Million Won per Month

Young fishermen selected for the program will receive subsidies on a sliding scale based on their experience in fisheries management. Those in their first year will receive 1.1 million won per month, those in their second year will receive 1 million won per month, and those in their third year will receive 900,000 won per month. Those wishing to apply may submit their applications in person at the Marine and Fisheries Division of Gangneung City Hall or by mail.

Seo Hye-jin, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Division at Gangneung City Hall, stated, "We hope this settlement support program will not only help young people establish stable careers in the fishing industry but also serve as an opportunity to revitalize the local fishing industry." For more details, please check the "Notices and Announcements" section on the Gangneung City Hall website or contact the Fisheries Policy Team in the Marine and Fisheries Division.
