RFHIC (Chairman Cho Sam-yeol, President Cho Deok-su) is developing a core system for the production of turquoise hydrogen based on GaN solid-state SSPA (Solid State Power Amplifier) technology.
GaN Microwave-Based Blue-Green Hydrogen Production System
RFHIC is participating as the lead institution responsible for biogas-based green hydrogen production technology, one of the core areas of this project.
Dr. Kim Sang-jin, who also serves as Business Unit Head, is responsible for establishing a continuous turquoise hydrogen production system using GaN solid-state SSPA-based microwave technology. Turquoise hydrogen is a method of hydrogen production that enables the simultaneous production of hydrogen and solid carbon without carbon dioxide emissions, and it primarily utilizes microwave-heating-based processes.
Expanding the Application of Technology to the Clean Hydrogen Production Sector
RFHIC is applying microwave technology based on GaN solid-state power amplifiers to the “clean hydrogen production sector.” This represents an application that extends RF and microwave technologies—which have traditionally been used primarily in telecommunications and defense—into the energy industry. Going forward, the company plans to secure core equipment technologies for the green hydrogen production process and establish a new growth foundation in the fields of hydrogen production and continuous manufacturing of carbon materials.
Development of Carbon Material-Related Technologies
The solid carbon generated during the production of turquoise hydrogen can be utilized as a carbon material, and research into the potential applications of this material is also underway. Participating organizations include RFHIC, the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KICT), EST, and RIST, among others, and the development of turquoise hydrogen production technology and carbon material utilization technology is proceeding in parallel. Meanwhile, RFHIC participated in a meeting to share research results from the “Development of Technologies for the Production of Turquoise Hydrogen and Continuous Manufacturing of Carbon Materials Using Underutilized Energy Resources” project—a cross-technology convergence R&D initiative supported by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology Planning and Evaluation (KEIT), an affiliate of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy—and
Similar to RFHIC, all three sub-research institutions participated to review major research achievements, share directions for developing core technologies for future turquoise hydrogen production, and discuss ways to integrate technologies across sub-projects and move toward demonstration.
