[Suwan News = Reporter Kim Dong-ju] Samyang Foods Co., Ltd. held a signing ceremony on the 10th to formalize its investment in a new liquid soup factory in Wonju. Under the agreement, Samyang Foods plans to invest 78 billion won by the first half of 2027 to build a dedicated liquid soup factory on the site of its existing production campus in Usan-dong.
The signing ceremony was attended by Mayor Won Kang-su, CEO Kim Dong-chan, and other key executives and officials.
Since a significant portion of the production capacity underpinning Samyang Foods’ export growth is based in Wonju, this is expected to establish Wonju City as a key hub in Samyang’s global supply chain while further elevating the status of the local food industry.
The city plans to provide financial support, along with active administrative assistance—such as expedited processing of permits and approvals—to ensure that this investment contributes to increased local tax revenue, job creation, and the revitalization of the local economy.
This investment is a follow-up decision made eight months after the completion of the palm oil refining plant operated by Samyang Flour Mills, a sister company within the same group, in April of this year, and is seen as a demonstration of the Samyang Foods Group’s confidence in Wonju City and its commitment to continued investment.
The city plans to maintain close communication with Samyang to strengthen this trust and ensure that follow-up investments continue. It also plans to further solidify their cooperative relationship to promote sustainable local investment and mutual growth.
Meanwhile, since establishing its first factory in Wonju in 1989, Samyang Round Square has grown into a global food company with cumulative sales of 1.7 trillion won. Currently, approximately 1,500 employees work at four affiliated companies in Wonju, including Samyang Foods, Samyang Flour Mills, Samyang Round Earth, and Samyang Logistics. This investment is also expected to create 90 new jobs.
Furthermore, by continuing to engage in various corporate social responsibility activities—such as supporting vulnerable communities in the region, sponsoring the “Angel Movement,” and donating scholarships—the company has firmly established itself as a local enterprise that truly represents Wonju.
Mayor Won Kang-soo said, “We will spare no effort in providing support to ensure that this investment agreement serves as a model of mutually beneficial cooperation for both Wonju and Samyang Foods,” adding, “We will do our utmost to achieve tangible results, such as strengthening the competitiveness of local industries and creating jobs.”
